Landscape cover type, not social dominance, is associated with the winter movement patterns of Snowy Owls in temperate areas

چکیده
Abstract Migrating animals occur along a continuum from species that spend the nonbreeding season at fixed location to are nomadic during season, essentially continuously moving. Such variation is likely driven by economics of territoriality or heterogeneity in environment. The Snowy Owl (Bubo scandiacus) known for its complex seasonal movements, and thus an excellent model test these ideas, as many individuals travel unpredictably irregular routes both breeding seasons. Two possible explanations this large propensity move (1) dominance hierarchies which dominant (adult females case) monopolize some key, consistent resources, less than subdominants; (2) habitat foraging rich heterogenic environments mobile. We analyzed fine-scale telemetry data (global positioning system [GPS]/global mobile communication [GSM]) 50 Owls tagged eastern central North America 2013 2019, comparing space use winter period according sex age, land cover attributes. used variograms classify (58%) range-resident (42%), found owls had ten times larger wintering areas owls. frequency nomadism was similar socially-dominant adult females, immatures, males. However, increased west east, north south, positively associated with water negatively croplands. conclude individual Eastern movement patterns time primarily extrinsic factors, specifically prey availability, opposed intrinsic factors spacing behavior, such age sex.

Snowy Owl Predation on Short-eared Owls
A problem confronting Snowy Owls (Nyctea scandiaca) in their southern incursions is the shortage of food. This difficulty is raised by the presence of other raptors that feed on small mammals. This note shows how little food is found by migrant Snowy Owls and indicates a complex temporary ecological solution. At Tatoosh Island, Washington (48”24’ N, 124” 44’ W) on 25 November 1973, we observed ...

Background and Objectives: There is convincing evidence that subjects concomitantly affected by type 2 diabetes (T2D) and metabolic syndrome (MeS) are at greater risk for cardiovascular disease (CVD). Many metabolic derangements in T2D might be attributed to poor vitamin D status. The purpose of this study was to investigate the associations among vitamin D status, MeS and glycemic status in su...
متن کاملSocial dominance in tilapia is associated with gonadotroph hyperplasia.
Tilapias are emerging as one of the most important fish in worldwide aquaculture and are also widely used as model fish in the study of reproduction and behavior. During the reproductive season, male tilapia are highly territorial and form spawning pits in which the dominant males court and spawn with available females. Non-territorial males stand a much lower chance of reproducing. Using trans...
